The system approach in lab-on-a-chip technology is key to make reliable and easy-to-use diagnostic devices happen: The combination of chip, instrument and assay forms the lab-on-a-chip system and requires an interdisciplinary co-development. The realization as an open diagnostic platform making use of different building blocks allows to cope with the challenge that various analytical tasks need to be answered with one system. This flexibility to use various microfluidic devices with one instrument allows for the integration of various assay concepts even applying different sensor technologies.
