Natural Products: IMPs, PAINS, Pride, and Prejudices

Michael Walters, Research Associate Professor, University of Minnesota

On one hand, natural products are the source or inspiration of many successful therapeutic agents. On the other hand, natural products are also a source of assay interference (PAINS) or invalid conclusions (IMPS). Both can lead to “research side-effects” that range from hyperpublication to distraction and rash (clinical trials). Following an overview of the underlying concepts of interference and invalidity, we will present ways to help insure that the vital but already challenging research on natural products remains focused on truly active components and is not blinded by prejudices of the “scientific” marketplace.
