Shoufeng Yang,
Associate Professor
Dr Shoufeng Yang is Professor within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton and Chair of Additive Manufacturing. He has his first degree and Ph.D both from Tsinghua University, Beijing. He has worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Queen Mary, University of London. He was then appointed as EPSRC platform grant research fellow, RCUK academic fellow, lecturer, and senior lecture at QMUL before he moved to University of Southampton as Senior lecture and Associate Professor then Professor. He has been working in additive manufacturing (3D printing) for 20 years. His main research interests is the second generation of additive manufacturing i.e. multi-materials additive manufacturing (MMAM), in which both the materials composition and the shape of objects are computer controlled throughout three dimensional space. He has created dry powder micro dispensing devices that allow three dimensional functional gradients to be built by selective laser melting. This project was selected for prestigious Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition (royalsociety.org/From-music-to-sand-painting/). Majority of his projects are funded by EPSRC, DSTL, Horizon 2020 and various industrial funding. His research interests include MMAM, artificial neural network (ANN), pharmaceutical powder printing, pyro techniques material 3D printing, metamaterials, inkjet printing and dry powder printing, combinatorial materials research and tissue engineering scaffold fabrication.
