Andrew Devitt's Biography

Andrew Devitt, Director of Research for the Cell & Tissue Biomedical Research Group

Andrew Devitt heads the Cell & Tissue Biomedical Research Group, School of Life & Health Sciences, Aston University, UK. He studied Microbiology at The University of Manchester and undertook his PhD research at The University of Birmingham (1995). Research throughout his career has focused on the innate immune system and its role in protection against microbial challenge and in mediating removal of dying (apoptotic) cells. His postdoctoral research at Nottingham University and The MRC Centre for Inflammation Research at the University of Edinburgh preceded his current academic position at Aston University.

Dr Devitt’s research group now focuses on the mechanisms by which vesicles mediate the interaction of dying cells with the innate immune system and how this might contribute to health and disease. Research in the Devitt laboratory is funded currently by the BBSRC and the Nc3R.
