Luphumlo Ncanywa's Biography

Luphumlo Ncanywa, Researcher, Paul Watts Laboratory

I graduated from the Nelson Mandela University in 2010 ND Polymer technology. I worked at the Goodyear for two years to have experience of how the industry functions. I decided to come back further my studies. I studied at Nelson Mandela University, obtaining a BSc Honors Formulation Science 2012 and MSc Chemistry in 2015. I was introduced into flow chemistry by the arrival of Prof. P Watts in our university. I have conducted some excellent research under his supervision on the use of continuous flow technology to prepare an anti-malaria drug. South Africa currently imports all of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) required for treating HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria. While South Africa has a number of companies that formulate medicines, it does not have an established pharmaceutical industry to manufacture the required APIs. Consequently the vision of the research conducted is to facilitate cost effective production technology to enable local drug manufacture in order to improve drug availability.
