Murray Mitchell's Biography

Murray Mitchell, Professor

Murray D Mitchell D Phil DSc FRSNZ FRCOG is Professor and immediate past Director, University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research. He has a long record of success in translational research in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and in particular around the topic of preterm labour. This was recognized by his peers with the award of Fellowship ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2016. His body of work both in vivo and in vitro with Roberto Romero led to the development of measurements of intrauterine infection within the treatment plans for those attending Labour and Delivery with a complaint of preterm labour. This complemented his earlier work describing parturition as an inflammatory reaction with particular emphasis on arachidonic acid metabolism. This formed the basis of his Programme grant from the Health Research Council of New Zealand. Overall he has received more than $50 million in research funding. In his role as President-elect of The Society for Reproductive Investigation (ex SGI)and a member of the Executive Council he is focussing attention on key areas of Translational Biology as they intersect with Obstetrics and Gynaecology on a global level and he is continually updating where cutting edge developments are relevant in the area. He has extensive experience with matters of research governance from his time as Deputy Dean of The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland and Research Director of The Liggins Institute as well as Director, UQCCR.
