Industry Academic Relationships in a New Era of Drug Discovery

In recent years the UK government has encouraged academics to consider the potential impact of the research funded by the public purse. The Research Excellence Framework and the UK Research Councils “Pathways to Impact” agenda has done much to change the culture of academia who are now more likely to engage with industry. This talk will outline a number of academic industry models that have been developed to accelerate drug discovery and to develop new areas of underpinning science and technology. Examples will be drawn from a number of company initiatives aimed at differentiating a pharmaceutical company as a preferred partner of choice. Some of these models will focus on target validation and the development of drug candidates whilst others will be those relating to the development of underpinning technologies aimed at reducing attrition.
