Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) based Lab-on-a-Chip on a Single Substrate

Surface acoustic wave based devices has been used recently for microfluidic actuation including mixing, pumping, preconcentration and separation. A fully integrated lab-on-chip requires sensing and actuation on a same substrate so that the analytes at low concentration can be sensed without any sample loss while transferring between different devices for detection. Towards realizing this goal, we designed, fabricated and tested a single substrate based sensing and actuation device using surface acoustic waves. The detection is mediated by using SAW as a receiver for the photoacoustic mode-converted SAW signal generated inside a microchannel. The capability of the device is demonstrated by detecting particles of different sizes at varying concentrations.
