Lab-on-Chip Systems for Pathogen Analysis
Gerald Urban, Professor, Albert Ludwigs Universität Freiburg
Micro- and Nanotechnology are actually entering life science and medical applications. Lab-on-Chip and bioanalytical systems especially, have attracted a lot of emphasis during the last years. Microfluidic and nanotechnological systems on chip exhibit the potential of cell based analysis especially pathogen detection on chip. Their use and suitability to be integrated into highly-sensitive bioanalytical tests was demonstrated so far. Unsolved problems are the detection of low concentrations of pathogens in real environment samples without any interference. The integration of actuation elements, electrophoresis, enrichment and purification steps enable the rapid detection of pathogen in real samples.
