Photochemical Reactions in Flow
Aaron Beeler, Assistant Professor, Boston University
Flow chemistry has provided a unique opportunity to enable the application of photochemistry which is an exceptionally powerful but sometimes underutilized tool in organic synthesis. We have developed a flow platform that enables us to utilize photochemical reactions for application in medicinal chemistry and natural product synthesis. The platform utilizes a xenon(Hg) lamp that generates a 2-inch UV beam that is collimated and wavelength filtered. The platform also accommodates a number of flow reactors that can be selected for volume and temperature control. The lecture will cover our efforts to develop a compact and user-friendly system and development of a number of photochemical reactions including [2+2]-cycloadditions, aryl coupling, photo-deprotections, and [3+2]-cycloadditions.
