From Learning to Deep Learning in Life Science Research Imaging, Towards the Promise of Artificial Intelligence

In this talk I will present our history of supporting researchers in learning on images and its application to scientific informatics. Our early work was focused in determining stages of the cell cycle and tumor classification and relied on methods like Bayesian Learning and Recursive Partitioning. More challenging image recognition problems like crystal classification have led us to explore new methods such as Deep Learning.
