Abstract

New Approaches for Medical Diagnosis and Therapy Using Microfluidic Devices

Manabu Tokeshi, Professor, Hokkaido University

Microfluidic devices have great potential for medical and life science applications. Recent progresses in microfluidic devices have enable precise analysis of a small amount of a particular chemical (e.g. protein, DNA, drug, etc.) in blood or urine. We have developed that several immunoassay systems using the microfluidic devices for rapid diagnosis of biomarkers. Recently, we developed a new device called an “immuno-wall device”, which has the desired features for easy-to-use detection of biomarkers. It has a wall-like structure inside a microchannel. The Antibodies are immobilized onto photo-reactive polymer wall (40 ?m width, 40 ?m height and 8.5 mm length). We applied it to several applications and confirmed our device provides rapid analysis with high sensitivity, it is easy-to-use, and it uses small volumes of the sample and reagent. In this presentation, I will present our recent progress in this topic.
