Abstract

Analysis of Proteomes: Understanding Biology

Medicharla V Jagannadham, Senior Principal Scientist, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology

Identification of proteins and their complexes provides insight into the structure and function of biological systems. At present, it is possible to identify large number of proteins using mass spectrometry in a short span of time. A large scale data analysis system is required to analyze the data obtained from different algorithms for correct identification. The implications of using different algorithms and their role in the identification of proteins will be discussed. Whole genome studies generate valuable clues required to identify several proteins with unknown functions. Functional prediction based on structure and similar type of protein-protein interactions in different organisms is possible by the use of suitable algorithms. Several algorithms were developed during the recent past to predict the interactions of proteins and their functional importance. Strategies used for identification of proteins along with functional analysis and large scale evaluation of protein function prediction will be discussed in detail with suitable examples.
