Abstract

Additive Manufacturing in Tissue Engineering: Current state-of-the-art on 3D Scaffolds

Chee Kai Chua, Executive Director, Nanyang Technological University

Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are able to produce parts with highly complex architecture designs within a short lead time, allowing mass customization and removing tooling needs. Advancements in these fabrication techniques enable the manufacturing of customized scaffolds for tissue engineering with precise dimensions from medical images or computer-aided design models. This article reviews the key AM technologies and recent AM developments in tissue engineering. Topics of discussion include scaffolds for tissue engineering and the design considerations of these scaffolds. The potential and challenges of implementing AM are presented. Future exploitation of AM for tissue engineering is envisioned in this presentation.
