Abstract

Microarray and Microfluidic Chips for Preventive and Personalized Medicine

Jing Cheng, CEO, CapitalBio

For the purpose of preventing diseases from happening we have developed microarrays for identifying individuals, who may lose their hearing by prescribing aminoglycoside antibiotics, and who may generate cervical carcinoma by infection of certain Human Papilloma Viruses. As an example, over 300,000 newborns in China have been screened for drug inducible hearing loss using our DNA microarray last year and close to 700 newborns were found with mitochondrial DNA mutations associated with aminoglycoside antibiotics. Other chips have been developed for prenatal diagnosis of thalassemia and over 500 chromosomal abnormalities. Additionally, microarray and microfluidic chips were developed for the identification of 17 mycobacterium and 12 respiratory pathogens, and for the detection of drug resistance regarding tuberculosis and HBV infection.
