Abstract

3D Printing of Fluidically Sealed Devices

Yann Lecouturier, Regional Director of Europe and China, Dolomite Microfluidics

Microfluidics is now established as a multidisciplinary field covering numerous applications in engineering, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, clinical diagnostics, nanotechnology and biotechnology. There are many techniques used to fabricate devices with wide ranging materials and costs. One of the largest challenges that remains is that the cost and timescales to design a prototype device is prohibitive to many researchers. During the research phase, it is a regular occurrence that multiple designs of devices are tested prior to achieving the correct device. In today’s highly dynamic market, the ability to quickly upgrade and develop products is crucial. The current techniques available to researchers can result in lengthy delays which can be very costly.

This talk presents a novel system utilising 3D printing technology, Dolomite’s Fluidic Factory, which overcomes these challenges and allows rapid prototyping of micro- and milli- fluidic devices and components. Dolomite’s 3D printer Fluidic Factory presents a framework for flexibly, iteratively, and quickly prototyping microfluidic components. Dolomite’s innovation is applied to enable easy fabrication of fluidically sealed devices using FDA approved COC polymer for diagnostic disposables. The intelligent printer ensures fluidic paths are sealed and features an upgradable print head, bed and software for future functionality.
