Abstract

Nontargeted Detection of Metabolites in Saraca asoca L. Leaf Extract and its Effects on Oxidative Stress and Alleviating Cognitive Disorder

Sainiara Begum, Research Scholar, Calcutta University

The objectives of the present study were identification of metabolites using Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and assess the neuroprotective and antioxidant potential of extract of Saraca asoca L. leaf. Methods: The methanolic extract (ME) of the dried leaf powder was subjected to assessment for acetylcholinesterase inhibition for neuroprotection and against different Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) producing systems viz., DPPH radicals, superoxide anions etc. Metabolite profiling was performed using GC-MS after proper derivatization maintaining methylation followed by silylation.
A total of 37 compounds belonging to different classes were detected. Among them 8 compounds were phenolic in nature. The extract inhibited the enzyme and scavenged the radicals.
Results made us to infer that leaf could be used as neuroprotective as well as antioxidant agent. The positive response in all aspects is probably due to the presence of these metabolites.
