Abstract

Micro Segmented Flow in Miniaturized Toxicological Screenings and Nanoparticle Technologies

J Michael Koehler, Head of Department, Technische Universitat Ilmenau

The technique of micro segmented flow allows an automated generation and processing of separated liquid droplets in a well-defined order. Each droplet with a typical volume in the sub-microliter or the nanoliter range can be used a single chemical reactor or a single test volume in biological assays. This technique is particular interesting due to their highly reproducible local transport and mixing conditions resulting into constant conditions in continuous flow processes and very narrow residence time distribution, which is applied for the flow synthesis of different types of plasmonic nanoparticles with high yield and homogeneity and for stochastic confinement for bioscreenings. A particular interesting feature is the tuning of concentrations inside the fluid segments by computer-controlled flow rate variation. This method is used for an automated structure variation of composed nanoparticles and for the determination of highly resolved dose/response functions in miniaturized toxicological screenings.
