Abstract

Identification of New Candidate Genes for Ocular Disorders

Periasamy Sundaresan, Senior Scientist, Aravind Eye Hospital

The major sight threatening eye diseases of the aging population in the world are glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.  To better understand the genetic etiology of these complex eye diseases are to be explored to understand the pathogenesis of the diseases. Our understanding of the genes involved in inherited eye diseases is now sufficiently advanced and molecular technology is adequately powerful that we can reasonably expect the development of useful diagnostic tests for nearly all inherited eye diseases /gene therapy for some of eye diseases within the near future. I will be discussed in detail during the presentation about our experience in the field of ophthalmic genetics for the past two decades related new candidate genes identified for  Congenital Hereditary Endothelial Dystrophy  (CHED),  Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXF) and  Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma (PACG).
