Abstract

Commercial Development of Organ-on-a-chip Systems – Challenges and Strategies

Juliane Schnabel, Scientist Application, Microfluidic ChipShop GmbH

Organ-on-a-chip has been a field of strongly increasing academic activity in recent years with a clear pathway towards industrial applications, namely in the pharmaceutical industry but also as tools in Life Science research. As in many other lab-on-a-chip areas however, there is a substantial barrier in the transition from academic results to a commercial product development. This presentation will highlight critical points along this transition and indicate approaches to overcome these challenges. We will present different examples of organ-on-a-chip devices with special emphasis on issues of manufacturability and scalability, taking the interaction of materials, surfaces and cells in these devices into account.
