SELECTBIO Conferences Organ-on-a-Chip and Body-on-a-Chip: In Vitro Systems Mimicking In Vivo Functions

Abstract

Organ(s)-on-a-Chips Mimicking Physiological Environment and Parameters

Hiroshi Kimura, Associate Professor, Tokai University

Organ-on-a-chip based on microfluidics is an emerging technology with potential to provide physiological reactions to chemicals in vitro. Our research group is working on mainly in fundamental technologies of microfluidic devices and systems, and their applications to biological sciences including Organ-on-a-chip and Body-on-a-chip. In this presentation, we introduce integrated microfluidic platforms which mimic physiological environment and parameters on Organ-on-a-chips. We have applied the devices to cell based assays, and embryo and tissue cultures. The results have showed that it is important to reconstruct the physiological parameters in vitro for maintenance of cellar activity and reproduction of physiological reactions. I believe that these devices may have applications in drug screening and toxicity testing.
