Abstract

Micro-Technologies as Enablers for Point-of-Care Applications

Daniel Caminada, Section Head Microdiagnostics, Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology

Next generation Point-of-Care devices have to be small and robust and at the same time reliable, easy-to-use and low-energy. New technological approaches are needed to address this requirements. CSEM SA is a leading research and technology organization (RTO) and performs applied development of micro-technologies with the technology transfer of these technologies to the industry in mind. Thereby, CSEM SA is reinforcing the competitive advantage of its industrial partners. Surface functionalization, electrochemical sensing, and microfluidics are existing technology platforms at CSEM SA that are enabling Point-of-Care (POC) devices. For CSEM SA, collaborations with other innovation centres and research entities is crucial. In view of this, we have built up a strong national and international network. We work together amongst others with CEA/Léti in France, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft (Mikroelektronische Allianz) in Germany and VTT in Finland. Together with these institutions, CSEM SA created the HTA (Heterogeneous Technology Alliance), to prepare for the next generation of technology. On a national level, a Thematic Platform IVD (part of the National Thematic Network NTN Biotech) is currently being build up in Switzerland. It unites the key stakeholders in diagnostics and promotes technological innovation.
