Abstract

POC Blood Coagulation Monitoring Using Paper-Based Lateral Flow Devices

Andrew Steckl, Gieringer Professor, Ohio Eminent Scholar, University Distinguished Research Professor, University of Cincinnati

Paper-based microfluidic devices take advantage of the inherent capillary force in porous cellulose membranes to transport fluids without the need for external equipment. Combined with the low material cost of paper and associated device fabrication, this makes paper microfluidics a very attractive option for disposable POC monitoring devices. In this presentation, we will discuss the key POC application of paper microfluidics in the monitoring of blood coagulation properties. This is a critical factor for patients undergoing anti-coagulation therapy for cardiovascular disease, requiring frequent monitoring.
