Abstract



An Automated Sequential Flow Platform for Multi-step Chemical Processes

Multi-step chemical reactions [1,2], automation [2,3] and membrane-based separations [4] have gained momentum in the field of flow chemistry. However, multi-step processes including liquid-liquid extractions and separations for reaction work-up are rare, especially due to excessively complicated set-ups requiring numerous fluidic tools. The processes are greatly simplified using a sequential flow strategy where only two pumps execute all the fluid manipulations step-by-step by picking up and dispensing fluids through distribution valves [5,6]. In this way, only one copy of each fluidic tool is needed since the sequences are executed one after the other instead of all at once in a typical flow process: a single tool can be used for as many steps needed . For example, a chemical synthesis composed of three reactions each followed by an aqueous work-up with liquid-liquid separation can be achieved with only two pumps, one reactor, and a single membrane-based separator. A python script including serial communication with the pumps and a Graphical User Interface allows for simple control of the process and integration of other tools such as PID thermal control of the reactor. The hardware tools are packaged in a 3D-printed casing to obtain a compact and practical sequential flow chemistry platform.
