Abstract

Scope of Workshop: Manufacturing of Microstructure-based Point-of-Care (POC) Disposable Devices

Markku Känsäkoski, Vice President, Ginolis Ltd

Markku Känsäkoski,  Controlled Liquid Flow in a Microfluidic Channel.

Microfluidic-based chips offer many advantages over traditional macro sized counterparts: Easy handling (less hands-on-time, and less sample and reagents are required) and rapid test results (shorter analysis times). The shorter analysis time and easy handling of microfluidic chips is attractive for diagnostic applications because it enables rapid bedside and doctor’s office tests, offering the advantage of rapid test result that can be shared with the patient right away. However, diagnostic applications require a strict control of the sample fluid flow within the chip in order to ensure the required accuracy and reproducibility of the analysis/test. Typically operations such as mixing; incubation; separation; and detection are performed within the chip, which demands firm control of the sample fluid flow in terms of timing, volumes and flow rates. In this presentation the proprietary electronic wettability valve for the controlled flow of liquids in a microfluidic channel will be presented with practical examples.

Per Oskar Lithell, Precision Dispensing with Bellows Pumps

The dispensing pumps from Ginolis offers a modular solution to high precision dispensing.  The core of all pumps is a bellows system with the advantage of no friction parts. The result is a pump that will not need replacement of seals and other wear material. To operate the bellows, two types of actuation are used. The EMB line of pumps are based on a voice coil solution and the PAB is actuated by means of a piezo electric motor. The EMB has the advantage of completely silent operation with low maintenance or wearing parts. For even more precise dispensing applications, the PAB products gives the possibility to dispense from 1000 µl all the way down to 1.5 nl with the same pump. Both platforms offer very high to extremely high %CV values. Mechanical inter
