Acoustic Holograms to Shape Microfluidic Flows: Applications in Medical Diagnostics
Jonathan Cooper, The Wolfson Chair of Bioengineering, University of Glasgow, United Kingdom

To better control the interaction between surface acoustic waves and microfluidics, we have introduced the use of frequency dependent periodic arrays known as phononic crystals. These can create interesting new liquid manipulations, e.g. on-chip centrigugation, cell lysis through shear, cell separation, liquid heating and atomization.
