Stephen Newman's Biography

Stephen Newman, Assistant Professor, University of Ottawa

Stephen grew up in Newfoundland, Canada and carried out undergraduate studies in Halifax at Dalhousie University. There, he completed his B.Sc in Chemistry in while carrying out research projects in computational chemistry and organic synthesis. He then moved to Toronto where he completed his PhD with Mark Lautens on the discovery of new transition metal catalyzed reactions. Upon graduating, he moved to Boston to carry out postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the lab of Klavs Jensen where he applied his knowledge of organic synthesis and catalysis to the development of continuous processes for chemical manufacturing. In 2014, Steve joined the faculty at the University of Ottawa where he runs a research group in the Center for Catalysis Research and Innovation (CCRI). He and his team utilizes flow chemistry, high throughput robotics, and other automation technologies for the development of industrially relevant chemical reactions and processes.

The continuous nature of flow chemistry makes it ideally suited for recovery and recycling of waste products. Most efforts in this area have focused on improving turnover numbers in catalytic reaction. In this seminar, the automatic recycling of other high value materials will be discussed, enabling stoichiometric reagents to become pseudocatalytic.
