Rameshwar Bamezai's Biography

Rameshwar Bamezai, Professor/Director, Jawaharlal Nehru University

R. N. K. Bamezai, Professor of Genetics and currently the Director-Coordinator of the National Centre of Applied Human Genetics and Dean, School of Computational and Integrative Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University has served as Dean School of Life Sciences in the year 2004 and acted as a Coordinator of Bioinformatics between 1997-1998. He served his term as the 3rd Vice Chancellor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, a year ago. Prof. Bamezai was the Founder Chairman of the Institutional Ethics Review Board of JNU and several important UGC Plan and potential for Excellence Committees; Executive Councils, Courts, other Academic bodies of several Central & State Universities and Task Forces and Committees of DBT and ICMR. He is the current Chairman of the “Star College” programme committee of DBT. He was awarded with Late L D Sanghvi oration award for the outstanding contribution in Human Genetics research in India by the Indian Society of Human Genetics in the year 2012; and has delivered Platinum Jubilee Award lecture in the Indian Science Congress, Ahmedabad; Brigadier Khanna Oration in Delhi in the year 2011. Apart from delivering lectures and visits in several countries abroad, Prof. Bamezai was a part of India-Yale delegation to USA on Leadership in Higher Education programme in the year 2011. He is credited with three and a half decades' experience of teaching and guiding research in various Universities in the country; and has won several awards for his work including Hari-Om Ashram-Jagdish Chander Bose Award of UGC in Life Sciences for the year 2000, Acharya Abinavgupta Samman for monumental work in the field of Human Genetics-given by the then Chief Minister of J&K on behalf of G.M.College of Education and H.E.Society Kashmir, in the year 2003, KECSS award in Genomic Research by the Kashmir Education, Culture & Science Society, New Delhi, in the Year 2009. Prof. Bamezai is a Member of the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies and Fellow: Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medical Sciences and International Medical Sciences Academy. He has to his credit more than 120 papers published in journals like, CELL, JBC, Eur. J. Human Genetics, Human Genetics, PLoS Pathogens, PLoS Genetics etc and received Padma Shri award from the President of India for contributions in Science & Engineering in the year 2012.
