Tomas Ussing,
Founder & CEO - (Engineer - E),
FluimediX
Mr Tomas Ussing (b. 1969) has a degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Denmark. His holistic approach involving both analogue and digital electronics and embedded software as well as ‘life- time’ analysis, material physics and industrial design, lead him to the world of diagnostics – here under diagnostics based on microfluidic technologies. Mr Tomas worked as an engineer in a company working with cell diagnostics based on the Coulter-principle, but it was through his work with ion-channel patch- clamping in the Danish company – Sophion – that he was convinced that the world of microfluidics was in dire need of new basic tools. The company was – at the time – measuring nanoamperes out of cellular ion- channels simultaneously with applying liquid pressure using Electro Osmotic Flow (EOF) –pumps involving applying 80-100V directly into the liquid, and that obviously posed tremendous stress on the ‘signal to noise –ratio’. It was after Sophion that he – in 2003 - founded FluimediX based on ‘the laser driven micropump’, and he has been leading the efforts towards “smart diagnostics” since then. Mr Tomas has been instrumental in 9 patent filings within microfluidics and molecular diagnostics where of several are issued in Europe, Asia and US.
