Joel Calvin's Biography



Joel Calvin, Research Scientist, Eli Lilly and Company

Joel Calvin received his BS in Biochemistry from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1990. He obtained a position at Reilly Industries where he worked on optimizing the catalytic synthesis of pyridine and pyridine derivatives using fluidized beds as well as batch processes. Joel obtained his Masters in Organic Chemistry from Purdue University at Indianapolis in 1994. He joined Eli Lilly and Company in 2000 and began working on flow chemistry in 2008 and has been involved with several flow processes operated in manufacturing.

Development and implementation of flow process to make drug substance that include a Buchi operation for solvent exchange, Grignard formation using magnesium in a CSTR, a Negishi reaction in a solids handling PFR and a continuous anti-solvent/cooling crystallization of API. The process was run at our manufacturing small volume continuous facility.
