Michael Walters's Biography

Dr Michael A. Walters, A synthetic chemist by training, he holds a doctoral degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. Dr. Walters is a Research Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN, USA. He is a Director in the Institute for Therapeutics Discovery and Development (ITDD), an institute that both supports and initiates translational investigations in collaboration with the biomedical community in Minnesota and around the globe. While his main research centers on the medicinal chemistry of Alzheimer’s disease, he and his coworkers are currently also exploring treatments for chronic pain, breast cancer, heart valve calcification, and glioblastomas. His academic laboratory appears to be the first in the world to operationalize ALARM NMR, a method for detecting interference compounds that was pioneered at Abbott Laboratories in 2005. His training includes stints at Dartmouth College and at Parke-Davis & Pfizer. His publication portfolio includes over 50 peer-reviewed publications covering topics ranging from ab initio transition state calculations and support vector machines to natural product isolation and characterization.
