Periasamy Sundaresan's Biography



Periasamy Sundaresan, Senior Scientist, Aravind Eye Hospital

Dr. P.Sundaresan, heads the Department of Genetics, Aravind Medical Research Foundation, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India. He received his Ph.D from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai and served as a post-doctoral fellow at University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and Georgetown University, Washington DC USA. He worked as a Research Assistant Professor in School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, New York. Dr. Sundaresan’s postdoctoral training was on structure-function of Herpes simplex virus-1 glycoprotein gE & HSV-1: Viral Gene therapy for brain and prostate cancer.

Dr P.Sundaresan is currently working as a Senior scientist from Aravind Medical Research Foundation. His research focuses on the Molecular Genetics on inherited eye diseases.

He has published over 95 scientific papers in peer reviewed national and international journals. He has four Nature Genetics publications on genetics of Corneal endothelial dystrophy, PACG and PXF. He guided 15 Ph.D. He has been awarded the biotechnology overseas associateship award for the academic year 2005 – 2006 and CREST AWARD in 2010 – 2011 from Ministry of Science and Technology, DBT, Govt. of India. He received two ICMR awards – 1. Biomedical research scientist award and prize (2006) for his contributions in the field of Molecular genetics on inherited eye diseases. 2. Biomedical Research conducted in undeveloped ares (2009) and also received TamilNadu Scientist award (TANSA 2014) under the discipline Biological Sciences. In addition, Dr. P.Sundaresan received Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award (Medial council in India) for 2010 from Honourable President of India.
