Alison Devonshire's Biography

Alison Devonshire, Science Leader, LGC Limited

Following undergraduate degree, I worked as a clinical research associate implementing Phase II and III trials, before studying for my PhD in the transcriptional regulation of genes involved in metabolic diseases at the University of Surrey. For the last 10 years, I have worked in the Molecular and Cell Biology group at LGC, which holds the role of UK National Measurement Laboratory and Designated Institute for chemical and bio-measurements. I specialize in the application of nucleic acid measurements in clinical diagnostics and cellular analysis and am currently working on projects developing single cell-based approaches and standardizing measurements of cancer biomarkers.

The typically low concentration of ctDNA in cancer patients’ samples makes validation of analytical sensitivity a critical element in the assessment of a diagnostic test. The potential for real-time monitoring of tumor dynamics through liquid biopsy testing also necessitates a systematic evaluation of quantitative accuracy.  This presentation will discuss approaches to validate the performance of targeted methods for cancer mutations, including pre-analytical controls, and the development of reference materials and reference measurement procedures, which also support longer-term comparability and standardization of patient testing.
