Marc Garland's Biography

Marc Garland, Principal Scientist II, Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES)

Marc Garland received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH-Zurich). He then worked in the division for Asymmetric Synthesis and Catalysis in the Central Research labs of Ciba Geigy AG in Basle Switzerland. He returned to academia, first as Assistant Professor (Oberassistent) at the ETH-Zurich, and then as Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore. He now works at the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (A*STAR) in Singapore, where he is Principal Scientist II. There he is team leader for the group Advanced Reaction Engineering, Process Analytics and Chemometrics. Marc is recipient of the 1989 ETH Silver Medal (the highest award for graduate research), the 1993 ETH-Tokyo Institute of Technology Award in Engineering and 1st prize in the IBM sponsored competition High Performance Computation Quest 2003. He is author or co-author of over 150 peer-reviewed papers. Marc’s interests include homogeneous metal-mediated organic synthesis, vibrational spectroscopies, inverse problems and chemometrics.
