M Bhupathy's Biography

M Bhupathy, Executive Director, Amgen Inc

Dr. Bhupathy is a Synthetic Organic Chemist by training. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. After a brief stint teaching at the University of Pittsburgh, he joined the Merck Research Laboratories in 1987. He had worked on several drug candidates and is well versed with all aspects of Process Research. He led the Process Research team to develop the process for SINGULAIR™ and to transfer the technology for manufacturing. He also developed and implemented an outsourcing strategy for the Process R&D area at Merck. He managed the technology transfer efforts for outsourcing projects in Ph. 1 to Ph. III.

In 2003, Dr. Bhupathy joined Amgen as a director of the Chemical Process R&D department. He is currently an Executive Director in Therapeutic Discovery. Over the past 10 years at Amgen, he had managed the internal teams engaged in preparative chromatographic separations and the production of building blocks for medicinal chemistry projects, early tox materials, drug candidates for preclinical and Phase I studies. He has also led discovery collaborations, risk-reward partnerships, integrated programs and the outsourcing efforts on early stage small molecule as well as biologics discovery projects.
