Katrin Marcus's Biography

Katrin Marcus, Professor, Ruhr-University Bochum

Katrin Marcus studied Biochemistry at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. After finishing her diploma thesis she elaborated her PhD at the Proteinstrukturlabor of Prof. H.E. Meyer in Bochum, analysing the phosphoproteome of human thrombin-stimulated platelets. Since August 2002 she has been group leader at the MPC supervising several projects such as the „Human Brain Proteome Project“ and “Clinical Neuroproteomics of neurodegenerative diseases – cNEUPRO”. In August 2003 she was appointed as an Assistant professor for proteomics at the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr-University. In December 2007 she became Full Professor leading the Department of Functional Proteomics. Since March 2014 she is now Director of the Medizinische Proteom-Center (MPC), Ruhr-University Bochum. Her scientific work is especially focussed on the discovery of pathomechanisms underlying neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders such as myofibrillary myopathies, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease as well as detecting biomarkers for those diseases. Outstanding technical equipment including high-end mass spectrometers, laser microdissection and other proteomics instrumentation provides an excellent infrastructure for modern proteome research.
The MPC has a long-time and worldwide recognized scientific and methodological expertise in protein biochemical analysis offering an excellent infrastructure and bioinformatics facilities. Scientists at the MPC maintain a multiplicity of national and international collaborations within individual and network projects. Various national, European, and international projects are coordinated here, e.g. the HUPO Brain Proteome Project (HUPO BPP) under the patronage of the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO).
