Richard Walmsley, Professor, University of Manchester

B.Sc. (Microbiology) and Ph.D. (Genetics) at University of Kent (UK), followed by PostDoc at University of Chicago. Currently Professor of Genetics at University of Manchester. Founded Gentronix Ltd in 1999. Research activity moved from yeast genetics to genetic toxicology in human cells. Current interests include the development of experimental strategies to identify misleadingly positive in vitro results.

Increased accuracy in the detection of genotoxic carcinogens has resulted from improvements to regulatory tests, and development of new tests. Mitotically transmissable, 'epigenetic' changes in DNA methylation and histone modification present a new challenge. Should we testing for epigenotoxicity?
