Sophie Niemansburg (1985) studied Medicine at the University Medical Center of Utrecht. During her studies, she also took courses in Philosophy, such as 'philosophical ethics', 'normative ethics' and 'philosophy of science'. After receiving her medical degree in 2010 she worked as a resident at a Neurology department in Utrecht. In October 2011 she started her 3-year PhD project at the department of Medical Humanities, under guidance of dr. A.L. Bredenoord, prof. dr. W.J.A. Dhert and prof. dr. J.J.M. van Delden. The PhD project aims to address and raise awareness of the ethical issues in translating Regenerative Medicine techniques into clinical studies and society. In addition, the project aims to provide guidance on several of these ethical issues, including fair participant selection, design choices in terms of the appropriate endpoints and comparator, and risk-benefit assessment. In this project the main focus is on the ethics of the application of RM in the field of orthopedics and cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, she takes part in teaching different courses on medical ethics.
