Anil Singh's Biography

Anil Singh, Senior Scientist, ICAR-Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology

Dr. Anil Kumar Singh is presently working as Senior Scientist at ICAR-Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology, Ranchi. He obtained his Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar in 2004. Thereafter he joined International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi as post-doctoral fellow. In 2011, Dr. Singh joined CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur and continued till Dec. 2015.
Dr. Singh has made outstanding contribution in the area of plant functional genomics. He has identified and characterized several noble genes involved in plant stress tolerance. Dr. Singh has also developed transgenic rice and potato with improved biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. His group has studied the molecular regulatory pathway of apple bud dormancy under climate change conditions. His work on apple bud dormancy has been globally recognized. He was invited to deliver the invited talk in 1st International Apple Symposium held in Yangling, China during Oct. 10-16, 2016 with full funding support. He has been again invited to deliver the invited talk in 9th International Rosaceae Genomics Conference scheduled to be held in China during June 2018.
Dr. Singh has Vast experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). His group has performed transcriptome profiling of several plants, including Caragana jubata, horsegram, saffron, apple, tea, mustard. Dr. Singh has been instrumental in genome sequencing of twelve commercially important bacterial species identified from cold-desert areas of Himachal Pradesh. Dr. Singh has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals of high repute with cumulative impact factor >100 with >710 citations, and filed one international patent. Dr Singh is serving as editor of journal “Frontiers in Plant Science”. Dr. Singh has guided three Ph.D students, so far. He has been nominated as member of National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). He is also life member of Indian Society for Plant Physiology, New Delhi and Society for Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, New Delhi.

This talk will present how functional genomics approaches are exploited to identify and characterize genes involved in plant stress tolerance. It will also discuss regarding identification of NAC transcription factor (TF) family in potato and NBS-LRR disease resistance gene family which may be important candidate genes for engineering stress/disease tolerance in plants. Further, it will also cover the development of transgenic Arabidopsis which is overexpressing PaSOD and RaAPX genes and leads to enhanced and ectopic deposition of lignin in vascular tissues.
