Winston Koh's Biography

Winston Koh, Scientist, Stanford University

Winston’s research interest has always been at the interplay of scientific discovery and technological development. He started his graduate work on genome assembly projects involving Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) and botryllus schlosseri. Under guidance of his advisor, Prof Stephen Quake, the group began to develop sequencing based diagnostics for accurate quantification of fetal cell free nucleic acid levels in maternal bloodstream. These measurements aimed to provide insights into fetal development without the need for invasive tissue sampling. After his PhD, to find commercial applications in a clinical context, he joined Molecular Stethoscope a diagnostic company that his advisor founded to develop cell free nucleic based assays across a wide spectrum of human diseases. Winston is also interested in single cell sequencing and statistical modelling. In his research, he has employed computational approaches that uses single cell data to interpret clonal dynamics and heterogeneity of cancer tumor in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
