Thomas Wilson's Biography

Thomas Wilson, Student, Aberystwyth University

I completed by BSc and MSc in Environmental Chemistry, at the School of Chemistry, Bangor University, UK, where my master’s thesis focused on the use of GC-MS and NMR as tools for profiling the triacylglycerol content of the British bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta). I then joined the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), Aberystwyth University, UK, as part of the BEACON project. While pursuing PhD research interests I joined the High Resolution Metabolomics Laboratory run by Professor John Draper and Dr Manfred Beckmann, and began to combine my skills in analytical chemistry with bioinformatics and metabolomics. During the past four years I have applied global finger printing techniques to populations of wild Miscanthus, in order to further the understanding of its’ metabolome.

High resolution mass spectrometry fingerprinting methods have been used to explore the metabolome of the bio-energy grass Miscanthus, in order to maximise the understanding of the plant metabolome and add value with a bio-refining chain.
