Ajay Kumar Gupta, Director & Head, Confederation of Indian Industry

Dr. Ajay Gupta is presently working as a Head, CII Center of Excellence in Nanotechnology in collaboration with Gujarat Govt. He completed his PhD from Dept. of Chemistry, Univ. of Delhi in 2001 and did his post-doc. research from University of Glasgow, U.K. Subsequently, he worked with Crusade Labs Ltd., UK, Panacea Biotec Ltd, Torrent Pharma Ltd., Bioplus Life sciences and Intas group of companies, prior to taking up the present employment. One of the technologies that he had developed during his Ph.D. was transferred to Delhi based Panacea Biotec Ltd. His research interests include nanotechnology, characterization of nano materials and their industrial application. Many of his technologies which he had developed during his career has already been commercialized. He has 7 patents to his credit and published around 20 research articles. In 2006, he reviewed several grant applications for funding within the cluster "NANOHEALTH" for Austrian Nano Initiative program and was invited to Vienna by Govt. of Austria for hearing of Grant Applications.He was also a member of Healthcare Task Force Committee constituted by Department of Biotechnology, Delhi for 12th five year plan of Govt. of India. One of the review articles written by him has been cited by more than 2500 articles and is the most cited article in the journal "BIOMATERIALS" since its inception.

In this presentation, various selective targeting strategies using nanoparticles for achieving effective cancer detection and treatment would be discussed. Various targeting moieties which may be used as 'escort' molecules to specific tumor tissues including peptides and antibodies etc would be discussed. In addition, different methods of conjugating the functional moieties to nanoparticles and strategies for optimizing the nanoparticle surfaces for in vivo applications would be discussed.
