Luca Businaro's Biography

Luca Businaro, Scientist, Italian National Research Council

I'm a micro and nanotechnology scientist with twenty years’ experience in development of top-down fabrication techniques and their exploitation in several research and industrial fields with particular regard to nanophotonics, plasmonics, and microfluidics aimed at bio-medical applications.
I started working on machine vision hardware and software development (1994-2000). Since then I got interested in nanotechnologies, in particular micro and nanofabrication for interdisciplinary applications. I worked for mor than ten years at the ELETTRA synchrotron in Triest, and I’m now a scientist at the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnologies in Rome. My primary scientific interest is the development of experimental models of complex biological systems be means of the organ-on-chip approach.

Reconstitution of the immune system through organ-on-chip (OOC) approach opens a new window to live observation of the immune response to insults with or without drug treatments, making OOC a cornerstone for dissecting complex biological phenomena and pre-clinical testing of drugs.
