Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke's Biography

Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke, Associate Professor, Ghent University, Group Leader at VIB

Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke obtained her Master‘s degree in Biotechnology and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2008) at Ghent University focusing on gene therapy. After a postdoc on systemic inflammation, she founded her independent research lab in 2015 when she obtained a Professorship position at Ghent University. In 2018, she also became groupleader at VIB after obtaining the prestigious Baillet Latour award. Her ‘Barriers in Inflammation’ lab is imbedded in the ‘VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research’ at Ghent University and VIB and focusses on neuroinflammation, brain barriers, brain delivery, the gut-brain axis and extracellular vesicles.

Our brain is protected from the periphery via the presence of different brain barriers, including the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier. While this blocks access to the brain for most molecules, recent research has shown that some extracellular vesicles (EVs) are able to cross these barriers. In this talk, I will focus on the consequences of this phenomenon, including the impact of bacterial-derived EVs on the brain and the use of EVs to deliver therapeutics to the brain.
