Stefano Stela's Biography

Stefano Stela, Associate Professor, The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, University of Copenhagen

Stefano Stella obtains his PhD in Biology from the University of Camerino (Italy). As a PostDoc he joined the Department of Biological Chemistry at UCLA (USA) where his research focus was to understand how the proteins recognized the DNA target using structural approaches. He then moved to CNIO in Madrid to study both TALE and megaucleases to grasp the molecular basics of the interaction between these proteins and the DNA target. During this time he described a new modular DNA-binding protein that has unique characteristics compared to other TALE protein. Currently he is working as an Associate Professor in the Protein Structure & Function Programme headed by Guillermo Montoya at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research where he is developing new genome editing tools.

BurrH is a new highly polymorphic modular DNA-binding modular protein. The crystal structure reveals the DNA-binding to occur in a different manner compared to other modular proteins. This provides us with a new platform for genome editing.
