Lakshmi V Ramanathan, Chief, Clinical Chemistry Service, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Dr. Lakshmi V. Ramanathan received her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976 and is the Service Chief of the Clinical Chemistry Service, Associate Attending and Associate Clinical member in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Prior to joining Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, she was Director of Chemistry at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
Dr. Ramanathan is committed to improving patient care through education and research in the Chemistry section in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. She has trained numerous Clinical Pathology residents over a period of twenty five years and has developed a board certified fellowship program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Clinical Chemistry. Her research interests include laboratory automation, point of care testing and the development of laboratory tests. She is a member of the Translational Medicine Research Group in Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and is currently collaborating with industry and several investigators to develop and improve clinical assays.
She is the current President of the New York Metro section of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry and has held leadership positions in the section since 2005. She has been recognized by AACC for her outstanding contributions to the section.

This talk will address the challenges POC tests pose. Further, it will emphasize important factors like quality control, confirmatory testing, training of personnel performing the tests, regulatory guidelines compliance etc in order to provide the most accurate result to the patient. Specific examples will be discussed demonstrating the partnership between industry, the laboratories, point of care testing, and the clinical team in the ultimate care of the patient.
