Fernando Rafael Jativa's Biography

Fernando Rafael Jativa, Research Scientist, The University of Melbourne

Mr. Fernando Jativa is currently on his 3rd year of Phd studies at the University of Melbourne, Australia. His PhD project is very multidisciplinary--a joint collaboration between the departments of Pharmacology, Mechanical, and Chemical Engineering, where he has a supervisor for each. His research topic explores how lung diseases affects the mechanical properties of lung tissue and which can ultimately lead to novel treatments. In as much as he loves doing research, Mr. Jativa is also passionate about teaching. He currently works part-time as a tutor in the Engineering department in the university.

The present study show 3D fibroblast spheroids are an effective tool to study idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Spheroid stiffness was assessed by microfluidics and micropipette aspiration, revealing an increase of 64% in stiffness when using primary cells from IPF patients to make spheroids, whereas stiffness of individual cells was not altered by IPF.
