Fang Chen's Biography

Fang Chen, Scientist & Project Leader, BGI-Shenzhen

Dr Fang Chen joined Beijing Genomics Institute at Shenzhen (BGI-Shenzhen) at July 2008 and
participated in the early research and late clinical transfer of NIFTY project in BGI. In 2010, Fang became the Project leader Reproductive health and fetal medicine team, which focus on the research and clinical application in this field, such as noninvasive prenatal testing through maternal plasma sequencing for the detection of fetal trisomies, microdeletion and microduplication syndromes, single-gene disorders, thalassemia and paternity testing, investigation of genetic cause of miscarriages, preterm birth and other birth defects through amniotic fluid, CVS, placenta and tissues. Dr Chen has many publications to his credit.

This talk will discuss about maternal plasma DNA sequencing-based Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) which relies on the isolation of fetal cells and genetic testing, allow comprehensive interpretation of fetal developmental anomalies at early gestational age and provides clues for possible intervention and treatment in late pregnancy and neonatal period. It will also discuss about other materials, such as urine, saliva and stool, which have been under investigation in research level to explore the applicability of stability in real clinical setting. All these new advances in NIPT will be discussed which will contribute to applications with less invasive risk, simpler sampling process and multipurpose testing in the future.
