William Gray's Biography



William Gray, Professor of Functional Neurosurgery, Cardiff University School of Medicine

Prof. William Gray holds the University Chair of Functional Neurosurgery in Cardiff. He was previously Chair of Neurosurgery at the University of Southampton (2005-11). His clinical expertise is in epilepsy surgery and he leads the Wales epilepsy surgery programme, investigating patients with invasive intracranial EEG monitoring and awake surgery mapping. His research interests are in the neurobiology of learning and memory dysfunction, particularly in epilepsy, with an emphasis on brain repair. His group investigates mechanisms from cell biology to behaviour and imaging in humans. He has developed an in-vitro 3D culture system for human brain tissue and is currently developing serum, behavioural and imaging biomarkers for cognitive deficits in epilepsy and neurodegenerative disease.

He is Director of the BRAIN Biomedical Research Unit. He has served on the International League against Epilepsy’s (ILAE) commission on cognitive co-morbidity in epilepsy, the editorial board of Neurosurgery, Chair of the Academic Committee of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, European Brain Council Member, and past Secretary and Council member of the UK Chapter of the ILAE.
