Richard Chasen Spero's Biography



Richard Chasen Spero, CEO, Redbud Labs

Richard Spero is co-founder and CEO of Redbud Labs, where he leads both commercial activities and the company’s systems engineering team. He is a co-inventor of Redbud Posts, a MEMS chip covered with biomimetic cilia. Redbud Posts enable novel methods for fluid processing at the microscale, including pumping, mixing, cell sorting, and analyte isolation. This technology is used by point-of-care diagnostic device developers to improve assay speed, reliability, and performance. Prior to founding Redbud Labs, Dr. Spero earned his PhD in Physics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studied blood clot rheology and developed novel systems for magnetic manipulation and time-dependent high content screening.

Fast, Cartridge-Ready Sample Prep Using Off-the-Shelf Components

Sample-to-answer products are catching fire in the diagnostics and research markets, but microfluidic sample prep remains a major challenge. Methods that are ubiquitous at the bench, such as magnetic beads and centrifugation, translate poorly to cartridge formats. Meanwhile, microfluidic sample prep methods are generally proprietary and challenging to customize. We demonstrate microfluidic sample prep using commercially available components to deliver rapid affinity purification of target analytes. The result is an open platform for cartridge-ready sample prep that can deliver for lab-on-a-chip developers what magnetic beads enable at the bench.
